Compost is a decomposed material that you get when the collected organic waste decomposes completely. It takes about one month to 3 months to decompose compost material. We use garden waste like leaves, branches, etc with kitchen waste.
While making compost you need to take care of the ingredients. Because it is important that your material has a correct balance of Nitrogen and carbon. If the ratio of Nitrogen to Carbon gets disturbed the composting process stops at the time.
To speed up the composting or decaying of material you can use compost accelerators. Some people advise others to use homemade compost starters. But they forget about the human error. Because if your home-made compost accelerator is unbalanced your material will get wasted.
So be a wise gardener and use pre-made compost accelerators.
Uses of compost
Gardeners use compost to increase the fertility of the soil. Because when you keep growing plants at the same spot than that place became nutrient deficient. Plants need a high amount of nutrients to develop their structure and also to produce fruits.
Do not mix compost with any type of fertilizer. Fertilizers are made for plants. They give instant nutrients to plants, not to the soil. Whereas the compost acts as a soil conditioner and conditions the soil with all the essential nutrition.
All you need to do is collect the kitchen waste and garden waste at one place mix them properly and leave them as it is for 30 to 60 days in summers. Do not forget to protect your heap from raccoons, rats, and other pets.
Also, you need to tilt the mixture 3 time a week. For this purpose, you can use Pitchfork and shovel. Those having back pain are advised to make compost in compost tumblers bins. Because they are easy to use and you need to just rotate the handle of the tumbler to mix the compost.
Hydroponic Nutrients and Compost
We mic compost into the soil to make it super soil. Remember one important thing and that is compost is for soil no for hydroponic systems. do not mix compost into the nutrient-rich water of the hydroponic reservoir.
Hydroponic nutrients are specially designed for soilless gardening. Use hydro nutrients if you are using a hydroponic system like DWC Hydroponic systems etc.
Types of composting
There are 3 types of composting
Aerated window composting
Every gardener has unique needs and every plant is different from another even if they are of the same type. So which type of composting is right for you depend on many things like your local climate, size of your garden, types of plants you are growing, size of plants, and condition of your garden soil?
To check the conditions of soil, get your soil tested from a soil testing LAB. To check the pH of soil you can buy a home use soil pH tester kit.
Vermicompost uses worms and organic waste together to make powerful compost at home. you cannot use compost bins and tumblers to make vermicompost. Because tumblers are insulated form all sides to increase the internal temperature of the chamber. This rise in temperature can kill the worms and your compost will smell very bad.
For vermicompost, you need to stick to the traditional methods of composting that is heap composting.
